Description

Oxidized bitumen 115/15

Oxidized bitumen 115/15, also known as blown bitumen, is a type of bitumen that has been treated by blowing air through it at high temperatures, which modifies its properties. The numbers “115/15” refer to its softening point and penetration grade, respectively.

Softening Point (115°C): This indicates the temperature at which the bitumen softens. The higher softening point makes it suitable for applications in hotter climates or where materials are exposed to higher temperatures.
Penetration Grade (15 dmm): This represents the depth (in tenths of a millimeter) to which a standard needle will penetrate the bitumen under specific conditions. A lower penetration value means the bitumen is harder, which corresponds to its oxidized state.

Oxidized bitumen 115/15 is basically made by vacuum bottom or VB and any knows the name of VB in petroleum products industries.

Oxidized bitumen 115/15 must be made from VB by blowing hot air into the distillation towers of the refineries of our Bitumen factories in this process, hot air with a temperature of more than 250 degrees Celsius is blown into the distillation tower of bitumen through perforated pipes. as a result of this process, the hydrogen atoms in the Vacuum Bottom or (VB) hydrocarbon molecules are combined with the oxygen in the air and with the formation of water, the oxidization process will be done and a kind of bitumen that is called Oxidized Bitumen 115/15 will produce.

So, it means that only in this way the final product would be high quality and useable in all due industries.

Blown bitumen 115/15, which is a petroleum product, is a high molecular weight hydrocarbon that includes oil, resin, and asphaltene. The presence of 5 to 30% asphaltene in this type of bitumen makes this bitumen hard, and in blown bitumen or oxidized bitumen, due to the increase in the amount of asphaltene in its structure, this type of bitumen is harder than normal bitumen.

The bitumen penetration test, which is an international test, shows the type of oxidized or blown bitumen in different grades and for grade R115/15 the penetration would be about 10-20 the abbreviation of oxidized bitumen is R wherever the word R is in front of the bitumen specifications, it is a sign that the bitumen is oxidized or blown.
